Ahí vuelve un terrateniente de treinta años, Bieltov, decidido a hacer algo con su vida, y su introducción en el hogar de los Krutsiferski se va tiñendo de una ominosa ambigüedad. En cualquier caso, la instrucción, la cultura y la altura de miras se estrellan contra una pequeña comunidad de costumbres y jerarquías ridículas. Herzen compuso un magnífico cuadro de la sociedad patriarcal rusa, enriquecido por personajes secundarios magistralmente retratados y amenizado por un humor y una habilidad narrativa excepcionales.
